Climate Ventures: Cleantech

Climate Ventures: Cleantech

Please note applications are now closed, but you can still join Climate Ventures.

The climate crisis presents us with the opportunity to build the more resilient, clean and low-carbon economy of the future, bringing with it new innovations, outlooks, jobs, products, skills, manufacturing and technologies, and Canada’s cleantech sector is booming – ranked 4th in the world in the 2017 Global Cleantech Innovation Index.

The Centre for Social Innovation is launching a one-year program – part accelerator, part fellowship – to help entrepreneurs leading discovery to efficiency-stage Ontario cleantech startups grow their businesses in a market expected to be worth $2.5 trillion by 2022.

Our Cleantech Fellowship is the next iteration of our Agents of Change accelerator program, having supported over 200 enterprises and counting.

We’re building on the success of Agents of Change: Climate Solutions and establishing Climate Ventures, a climate solutions incubator and hub at our 192 Spadina Ave. building. The cleantech startups will work out of our new Climate Ventures space, embedded in our community of 2,500 entrepreneurs and innovators working to make the world a better place.

Applications are open until June 22.

Those who make the shortlist will be asked to come in to pitch for 20 minutes on either July 24 or July 25.

Fellows will take part in a full-day bootcamp September 10, monthly project reviews, peer circles and coaching sessions that can take place between 10 am and 6 pm, and pitch at Demo Night in March.

The accelerator runs through August 2018 – July 2019.

We are seeking innovative entrepreneurs working on cleantech solutions that will reduce Ontario greenhouse gas emissions in sectors such as:

  • Energy infrastructure, generation & storage
  • Transportation
  • Farming & land use
  • Bio-products & bio-chemicals
  • Materials
  • Water
  • Recycling & waste
  • Buildings
  • Manufacturing
  • And others

We will be reviewing applicants based on their potential impact, sustainability, and suitability for this program. Specifically, selection criteria will include:

  • Whether the entrepreneur is currently measuring, or will be able to measure, the GHG reductions of their technology in Ontario.
  • The potential scale and impact of the solution – we will be using Project Drawdown’s solutions ranking as a guide, while prioritizing those most relevant to Ontario.
  • That the enterprise is at the Discovery, Validation or Efficiency stage.
  • That the entrepreneur is working full-time on the enterprise, and has been working on it for at least a year.
  • That the enterprise is based in Ontario.

We will select up to 40 startups to come to a pitch day to present to our selection committee for 20 minutes on either July 24 or 25, and up to 20 will be invited to join the program.

If your enterprise is a part of the low-carbon revolution, helping to build a better, greener future, we want to meet you!
