As social entrepreneurs tackling social or environmental challenges our enterprises are intervening in complex systems (natural, engineered and social systems that interact). But with our focus and determination to bring our solutions to market, we can sometimes fail to keep in mind the importance and influence of those systems on the success of our solutions. In this intro to social innovation and systems thinking, we’ll look at a couple case studies of social entrepreneurship gone wrong, and tools that can not only help you avoid similar mistakes but also identify opportunities for greater impact and systems change.

Barnabe Geis is the Director of Programs at the Centre for Social Innovation where he designs and runs programs that grow startups and organizations with a social and/or environmental purpose. He leads CSI’s Climate Ventures – an incubator, coworking space, and a range of national accelerators that support entrepreneurs and innovators working on climate solutions – and has raised millions in funding for climate action programs. He is an Ariane de Rothschild Fellow, and holds a Masters in Journalism from Columbia University.
