Explore how to create purpose, structure, and meaning when work is no longer the centre of life.
Many people prepare carefully for the financial side of retirement or life after full-time work.
However, work often provides more than income. It gives structure to the week, a sense of identity, people to interact with, problems to solve, goals to pursue, and a feeling of being useful.
So when work is no longer the centre of life, the question is not only, “What will I do with my time?”
It becomes, “What will give my life energy, connection, purpose, and meaning now?”
This session is about stepping back and thinking intentionally about the next chapter. We will explore what well-being can mean beyond money, busyness, or simply filling the calendar, and consider how to create a life with more structure, purpose, and room for what matters.
In this session, you will:
-
Reflect on what work may have been providing beyond income
-
Explore what happiness and well-being may mean in this next stage of life
-
Consider what you want more room for when work is no longer central
-
Think about the strengths, interests, and values you may want to carry forward
-
Identify small experiments that could help you explore what comes next
This session is for people approaching retirement, already retired, reducing work, rethinking priorities, or simply wondering what life could look like when work is no longer the main organizing force.

This event is part of Staying Strong Through Change and Uncertainty, a six-week community learning series hosted by the Centre for Social Innovation and delivered by Career Aviators. It is designed to help business owners and professionals stay grounded, think clearly and keep contributing through the growing change and uncertainty we are all experiencing in our work, businesses, families and communities.
The series responds to the pressures many people are facing right now, including changes in work and technology, financial strain, climate concerns, conflict, career transitions and burnout. Each session offers practical tools for understanding these pressures and navigating change with greater clarity, resilience and purpose.
About Your Facilitator
Wayne Greenway has spent his career developing practical ways to strengthen psychological resilience in people facing profound uncertainty and change.
His early work focused on seriously ill children and youth and their families. He developed family-oriented, multi-system programs for paediatric teaching centres and held a faculty position with Queen’s University’s Faculty of Medicine for 16 years.
Wayne later applied this work with military families, people living with neurodegenerative disease, and professionals navigating career uncertainty. He is the creator of The Phoenix Series, a practical, research-informed program that helps people manage self-doubt, make sound decisions, and move forward through challenging periods of change.
