Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Accessibility
Social innovation refers to the creation, development, adoption and integration of new and renewed concepts, systems, and practices that put people and planet first.
There are countless reasons our existing concepts, systems, and practices need overhaul or replacement. One of the most urgent is their lack of diversity.
It is impossible to create and sustain true innovation without a commitment to equality. To put it more simply: If new perspectives and experiences aren’t shaping the new systems we are creating, how different will they really be?
At CSI, we work every day to change the world to one that is more equitable. We aspire to model the world we want to see. In order to do that, we need to examine how we are perpetuating this inequality, and how we can instead dismantle it within our community and spaces. Turning our eyes both inward and outward, we will continue to identify what systems are not working, and how we can work together to create the vision we have for a just and equitable society. This means determining where we fall short, and ensuring we have solid policies to address these shortcomings.
It also means working with community leaders to create opportunities to ask questions, challenge assumptions and to learn and appreciate what makes each individual unique and complex.
As you browse the documents on this page, ask yourself: How do I check my privilege? How can we engage in a conversation around identity, oppression, and colonialism? How do we learn from each other? How do we work together?
STEPS WE'VE TAKEN
We are committed to making sure Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) are at the core of everything we do. Learn about what steps our IDEA Committee, CSI Staff and CSI members have taken so far to accomplish this.
We want to make sure that our Staff, Board, DECAs and community are representative of the diversity we are committed to and, if not, determine what the barriers to entry might be, so that we can address them. To gather this information we conducted our first demographic survey.
TORONTO FOR EVERYONE
In February of 2017, we hosted Toronto for Everyone, a four-day farewell festival at Honest Ed’s in collaboration with CSI Members, arts and community organizations, and citizen volunteers. The event prioritized programming that was focused on inclusion and diversity. Find out what we learned.
OUR DIVERSITY, INCLUSION & ANTI-DISCRIMINATION POLICY
Our Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Discrimination Policy was created by our IDEA Committee in 2017 and is included in the contracts for every CSI Staff, DECA (work exchange participants), CSI members and those who rent our meeting and event spaces.
