Position Title: Communications Manager, Social Innovation Canada

Position Type: Full-time, fixed-term contract

Contract Length: 12 months, with possibility for extension or renewal

Compensation: 52-62k, commensurate with experience, plus benefits after probation period

Reporting to: Director, Social Innovation Canada

Location: Preference for Toronto-based candidates, but there is a possibility to work from anywhere inside Canada

Social Innovation Canada (SI Canada) is a newly launched national initiative to connect social innovation practitioners and enhance the collective capacity for impact on the sustainable development goals and social issues. We’re all about connecting social innovators and stakeholders from across geographies, sectors and subjects; building practical knowledge and capacity; elevating the role of change makers across Canada and helping tell their stories, aggregating their data and driving more resources and energy towards the work.

We’re looking for a great communicator who’s strategic, emotionally intelligent, organized and driven. As Communications Manager, you’ll report to the Director, Social Innovation Canada, and work with the new SI Canada team to establish this national ecosystem. This job will engage your head, heart and hands - you’ll be co-creating strategy, connecting our online community, sharing great stories of change, and contributing your special talents to engage for impact.

Core job responsibilities

Lead and co-create SI Canada Communications and Marketing strategy

  • Build on our first communications strategy and develop a content calendar and activate our engagement strategy

  • Develop our approach to storytelling and establishing our brand identity: help us tell the Canadian stories of Social Innovation

  • Implement the communications and marketing strategy, with regular reporting on engagement data and insights with the SI Canada Team and our six national partners

  • Lead creation of content on SI Canada team and with our national partners

  • Coordinate with partner communications and marketing teams

Build SI Canada's online presence

  • Lead website development

  • Manage social media channels

  • Identity integration opportunities with partners in the network

  • Activate and animate online community groups (including working groups, learning cohorts, Communities of Practice, regional groups, etc.)


  • A passion for our work, our vision and our people, aligning with values of inclusion, diversity, accessibility and sustainability

  • At least 5 years of work experience in marketing and communications, or in a relevant field

  • Excellent writing skills. Channel your inner journalist to make complicated ideas clear and engaging

  • Growth mentality. You see setbacks as learning opportunities. You are accountable and resilient, and you bring those qualities out in other people

  • Comfort using and learning digital tools like Asana, Salesforce and MailChimp

  • Minimum undergraduate level degree in journalism, social, environmental area of focus, or related

  • Strong experience and demonstrated skills in creating digitally-savvy products: comfort with web tools, data visualizations, online systems to help us grow the network digitally

 Bonus points:

  • Working knowledge of HTML/CSS/UX

  • Graphic design skills

  • Deeper marketing knowledge, including pricing and product development

What is CSI’s Role in Social Innovation Canada (SI Canada)?

SI Canada is a project of the Social Innovation Institute, the charitable affiliate of the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI). CSI has been a leader in this field for 15 years - primarily focused on supporting social entrepreneurs & social mission groups in Toronto. As the ecosystem was emerging it was clear that a national identity would be needed to ensure an inclusive and broad ecosystem could emerge. CSI has leant its leadership to the creation of the Social Innovation Institute (CSI’s charitable affiliate) and to the creation of Social Innovation Canada - a project of SII.  SII and SI Canada use the CSI platform to catapult their work forward. CSI is also the regional lead for Ontario.
