Director of Operations and Finance

Animal Justice is a national animal law advocacy organization, focused on improving laws and policies to protect animals in Canada. Our team works to pass strong new animal laws at all levels of government, ensures industries and corporations are held accountable for abusing animals, and fights for animals in courtrooms across the country. 

We seek a skilled and driven Director of Operations and Finance to lead the administrative and financial side of the organization. The ideal candidate will be passionate about Animal Justice’s mission and will have a strong background in operations and finance, including human resources, systems, strategy, fundraising, and budgeting. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to a growing organization working on a cutting-edge social justice issue.

Position Specifics

Position type: Full-time

Reports to: Executive Director

Work Location: Remote, hybrid, or at Animal Justice’s Toronto office; must be legally permitted to work in Canada. Toronto candidates preferred but all considered.

Start Date: As soon as possible

Salary: $92,000 to $105,000 annually (commensurate with years of experience)

Position Duties

The Director of Operations and Finance will be responsible for operational and financial management and oversight.

Duties:

  • Aid in implementing the vision and mission of Animal Justice under the direction of the executive director;
  • Oversee all organizational finances and financial staff, including financial management, budgeting, planning, analysis, audit, and investing;
  • Oversee human resources, including recruitment, staff development and retention, team culture, team training, performance management, benefits, and equity and inclusion;
  • Lead the process of developing and implementing a strategic plan every three years, and preparing an annual report every year;
  • Oversee all fundraising activities and fundraising staff, including fundraising drives, supporter acquisition, grant reporting, and donor communications;
  • Oversee organizational events, including but not limited to an annual animal law conference and fundraising events;
  • Oversee all operations activities and operations staff, ensure smooth functioning of systems, services, software, hardware, and equipment; 
  • Manage organizational risk by identifying key risks and developing strategies to address them;
  • Work with executive director to ensure compliance with all relevant laws;
  • Engage and coordinate with external contractors and volunteers as required;
  • Maintain strong relationships with supporters, and with peers at other organizations;
  • Travel as required to attend meetings, conferences, and other events;
  • Such other tasks as assigned from time to time.

Position Requirements

  • Excellent people skills, with the ability to lead, manage, organize, and motivate people;
  • Experience with finance, including financial management, budgeting, planning, analysis, and audit;
  • Knowledge of human resources, including recruitment, retention, training, performance management, and equity and inclusion;
  • Knowledge of nonprofit fundraising, including oversight to ensure key targets are met in fundraising drives, grant management, supporter acquisition, and donor communications;
  • Ability to track organizational progress against strategic plan and other goals;
  • Strategic mindset toward creating continuous improvement and growth, including through analysis of past performance;
  • Knowledge of operations, event planning, and project management; 
  • Ability to present in a compelling and concise manner internally and externally;
  • Knowledge of risk management and organizational compliance with Canadian  laws;
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and interested in Canadian animal protection issues. 

Position Assets

  • Minimum eight years of experience with finance and/or operations;
  • Strategic, highly organized, and able to execute complex initiatives; 
  • Able to travel a few times a year for conferences, campaigns, or team events;
  • Strong personal commitment to Animal Justice’s philosophy and mission to help animals in Canada.
