Managing Director

Title: Managing Director (Full-time, Permanent)

Location: Remote work with occasional travel to Toronto

Reports to: CEO

Employment Type: Permanent, full-time (37.5h/week Mon-Fri)

Direct reports: Finance Manager and Operations Manager

Compensation: starting at $90,000/year, Commensurate with experience, plus benefits after 3-month probation period.

Social Innovation Canada seeks an accomplished senior-level executive experienced in building high-functioning, impactful organizations in a national multi-stakeholder environment. This individual will bring strategic and operational insight to a growing team by bringing a background in programming and an understanding of social finance and impact investing. This individual will be a collaborative leader with experience implementing DEI frameworks and practices.

As the Managing Director, you will report directly to the CEO and be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization’s operations. This will include working with the CEO, Senior Leadership Team and board to develop the organizational strategy and oversee its implementation. You will be responsible for the operational plan and overseeing the allocation, management, and reporting of financial and human resources. You will work with the CEO to develop and implement company policies to achieve organizational goals and build systems for smooth and effective operations.

Key Responsibilities

A. Strategy and Operational Oversight

  • Responsible for the implementation of the strategic planning framework and the operational plan.
  • Contribute to the corporate decision-making process and development and execution of the strategic plan
  • Responsible for leading the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) through annual operational planning, establishing and monitoring timelines and targets for implementation and reporting
  • Support the CEO and the Board of Directors on legal, administrative and governance issues including contracts, government remittances, reporting and audits
  • Develop the evaluation framework with the SLT, creating systems for its implementation and collaborating with the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee to incorporate an equity and inclusion lens
  • Support the CEO and SLT on administrative matters, including preparing for staff and Board Meetings
  • Support the CEO in reporting quarterly reporting to the Board of Directors

B. Program oversight

  • Work closely with the Director of Programming and Senior Leadership Team to:
  • Support program development and implementation to ensure activities are aligned and contributing to the strategic goals
  • Oversee resource allocation, program budgets, and staffing allocations and reporting
  • Work with the SLT to ensure a coordinated approach to all program deliveries
  • Troubleshoot project challenges when escalated
  • Ensure our programmatic activities fall within our charitable objectives, regulations and legal obligations
  • Represent programs at key events

C. Financial Leadership

  • Work closely with the CEO and Finance Manager to:
  • Lead the annual budgeting process
  • Oversee financial tracking & reporting process
  • Manage the overall financial position of the organization
  • Ensure adequate internal controls, risk identification, and management systems are in place
  • Ensure compliance with audit and regulatory requirements and ensure financial reporting transparency with government and other regulatory and funding bodies

D. Human Resources and Culture

  • Collaborate with the SLT in developing and maintaining an agile structure for the staff to have a high-functioning and inclusive environment
  • Lead the planning, execution and management of strategic people management initiatives to foster a community of learning, engagement, and inclusion
  • Work with the CEO to develop, implement and monitor equity-based employment policies and practices that ensure legislative compliance and model SI Canada values
  • Responsible for developing and overseeing policies and procedures that guide recruitment, onboarding and termination
  • Responsible for managing conflict resolution according to the parameters of policies and procedures
  • Lead the operations team and direct reports and coach and mentor to ensure their success
  • Develop and oversee the organizational development, training, culture and team-building strategy
  • Proactively and strategically supports the recruitment and retention of outstanding staff at all levels
  • Ensure all human resource requirements are effectively met

E. Digital Systems

  • Work with the SLT to develop and update information system strategies for each functional area, including cross-functional data and information requirements
  • Ensure adequate technology systems are in place and integrated with each other to produce reports supporting analysis and data-driven learning and decision-making
  • Ensure that the organization complies with privacy legislation

Qualifications and Experience

  • 10-15 Years experience in a senior management position including in a director or executive-level position
  • Knowledgeable of Social Innovation and Social Finance
  • Experienced in working in Canadian Non-profit and Philanthropic sectors
  • Experience in building organizations and change management
  • Experience with effective financial reporting and impact measurement
  • Experienced in human resources management including team building, leadership development, organizational development, policy development, equity and inclusion, effective conflict resolution, hiring and coaching and supervision of direct reports
  • Demonstrated skills in planning, organizing, and relationship building to support multiple stakeholders
  • Experience with effectively directing the operations and the delivery of programs within a user-focused information system toward the achievement of organizational goals
  • An inspiring leader and engaged team player with experience working across a diverse/complex business environment
  • Business administration or commerce degree or equivalent experience with a focus on finances, IT, project management and HR
