Evergreen is currently seeking to add to its team of Outdoor Educators. This group of individuals are the fabric that holds Evergreen’s Nature Play program together, ensuring a playful, engaging and safe experience for all participants. Their talents and interests are as diverse as their many contributions, and each is relied upon for their unique skills, perspectives, and experience.

Our Virtual Outdoor Educators contribute to the overall success of Nature Play by supporting a culture of experiential learning, place-based activities and connecting with nature in an empirical way.

About the Role:

Virtual Outdoor Educators are responsible for the facilitation of our Virtually Outdoors program, a unique and immersive curriculum-connected virtual excursion offered for free to public schools across Ontario.

Virtual Outdoor Educators play a key role in virtual program delivery, utilizing their unique skills to help our programs come alive. They have a passion for teaching, are comfortable on camera, care about and share their knowledge of Ontario ecology, and are eager to learn.

Virtual Outdoor Educators are comfortable in a dynamic online setting and extend caring, creative support to both program participants and their colleagues. They are mature team-players and strong communicators who believe in the power and importance of nature connection in transforming children’s lives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver engaging public and private educational programs and virtual nature-based activities for children and youth at schools across Ontario who attend Evergreen’s Virtually Outdoors program.
  • Facilitate nature-connected programs that represent the core values of Education and Children’s Programs at Evergreen: Place-Based, Ecological, Experiential, Active and Mobile, Arts-Infused, Integrated, Inclusive.
  • Connect with teachers to meet classroom expectations during online programs.
  • Engage in reflective practice to troubleshoot and improve upon existing programming.
  • Ensure safe and inclusive online settings in line with Evergreen’s policies, procedures, and training.
  • Act as an ambassador for Evergreen, including liaising with teachers and volunteers.
  • Document any behavioural incidents or customer service issues, and report to supervisor in a timely way.
  • Communicate a summary of program statistics and experience to supervisor.
  • Contribute to positive workplace culture and great internal communication.
  • Model Evergreen’s core values of sustainability, innovation, and connection. 

About You:

You excel in the following areas:

You have the following qualifications:

  • 1-3 years education or experience in children’s environmental education or related fields
  • Bilingual in English and French (required)
  • Experience and comfort facilitating virtual learning experiences for children ages 5-18
  • Comfort being on camera and working with various computer software
  • Experience working with individuals of different ages, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities
  • Complete a successful vulnerable sector police reference check (provided by Evergreen)

You might have the following assets:

  • Experience with Forest & Nature School practices and/or Nature Connection Routines
  • Experience with any of the following approaches to education: experiential, emergent, inquiry-based, play-based, or place-based learning
  • Naturalist or ecological knowledge
  • OCT (Ontario Certified Teacher) or ECE (Early Childhood Educator) Qualification 

Additional Information:

Reporting Relationships

  • Supervised by: Program Manager, Education

Working Conditions

  • Working with a variety of people, primarily children
  • Working remotely to facilitate virtual programming for children and youth
  • Available Tuesdays to Thursdays on a casual basis during school hours
  • Available to work at least two shifts of 2-3 hours per week

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting for extended periods of time

Technological Requirements

  • Access to a reliable internet connection
  • Laptop or desktop computer
  • Ability to run online video conferencing tools (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet)

Contract

  • Causal, hourly, up to 12 hours per week
  • Hourly rate: $23.15/hour
