Wasan Island Chef/ Sous Chef

Chef/Sous Chef Roles

Want to spend a summer in Muskoka paradise feeding changemakers from around the globe to fuel positive change in the world?

We are looking for a pair of Kitchen staff: one Chef and one Sous Chef, to join us for up to two months at a time over the summer season! We are planning to operate in three ‘work terms’ May-June, July-August, and September-October. These Chefs would need to commit to living and working on the Island for at least one full work term though both is an option.

About CSI

The Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) is a nonprofit social enterprise based in Toronto with collaborative workspaces, communities and national acceleration programs. CSI supports over 1,000 non-profits and social mission organizations tackling a range of social, environmental and economic challenges. Our mission is to catalyze social innovation by amplifying the success of our members and fuelling a movement for people and the planet.

Collaboration, entrepreneurship and systems change are embodied in everything we do. We have the passion and drive of a young tech start-up but remain rooted in the social movements of the 60’s and 70’s and bring the professionalism of the 21st century. We are wildly optimistic, committed to finding solutions that put people and planet first, while being deeply pragmatic. We are looking for someone who is committed to leveraging their skills, smarts and emotional intelligence to make an impact on our world.

This is a rare kind of crew – practical, friendly and deeply ambitious. We are determined to change the world and we have a plan, but we need your help to make it happen! We are making social change and having fun doing it.

About the Role:

CSI has partnered with Breuninger Foundation to operate the extraordinary Wasan Island on Lake Rosseau in the heart of the Muskoka Lakes. Breuninger and CSI share a commitment to operating Wasan Island as a restful and restorative place for non-for profit and charitable activities, for visioning, reflection and strategy, for strengthening diverse collaborations motivated by social purpose, for local and global initiatives and for creating a space for healing and rejuvenation.

CSI is looking for two extraordinary individuals that bring together radical hospitality, solid cooking skills and a deep commitment to living lightly on the planet.

Wasan Island is a retreat center- offering a beautiful space to the social innovation and social change community. With accommodations for up to 30 people, full service meals, recreational and conference amenities, all in a gorgeous Muskoka island setting. As staff, we spend our days driving boats, supporting conference needs, building fires, and yes, often taking out garbage. We are animators; passionate advocates willing to step in and do what it takes to host a summer of joyful collaboration, and convening, welcoming some of the world’s most amazing humans.

Kitchen staff responsibilities:

  • 3 family style meals per day to be prepared for up to 26 guests on the island, with accommodation for guests with dietary restrictions.
  • Shopping and food prep and clean up (a volunteer may also be available to help with clean up).
  • The kitchen is open and attached to the dining area, so Kitchen staff are considered client-facing (guests of the island may ask questions etc. )
  • We do have some days that are “all hands on deck” which would mean the entire staff would be working together to “flip” the island by changing bedding and cleaning rooms for the next group

Compensation:

Day Rates:

Chef: $250

Sous Chef: $175

  • Room and board is included in the compensation
  • Staff will be paid per the number of days that they have worked, approximately 22 days of work per month.
  • Our intention is to have a 5 day work week with 2 days off. However, flexibility is required. Staff may have to work weekends and holidays depending on bookings.

Working on Wasan Island:

Staff should be prepared to live on the island for the duration of their contract

They will be co-living in a team cottage that has capacity for four staff members

Transportation to the mainland can be arranged when needed.
