Toronto is rapidly growing but we, as Torontonians, are at odds with how we plan for change. Why is it that when we discuss development, we talk endlessly about technical measures like height and density, instead of how this development can improve our communities? We named our firm Smart Density since we believe intensification is critical, but it also needs to be done in a thoughtful manner and help improve the city. Smart Density is an architecture and urban design firm that puts the light on the community: in designing projects and spaces that benefit the community, and in making the community a partner in the process. We need a better dialogue between residents, the city and developers, and a design process that informs and counts on the community. A dialogue about what matters the most: the street level, the public realm and the mix of uses.
