British Columbia First Nation addresses digital divide

Across Canada, rural and remote First Nations face a significant digital divide. In the context of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis communities in Canada, the digital divide refers to the unequal distribution in access, use of, or impact of broadband connectivity and digital and communications technologies that exist between many Indigenous communities (especially in rural and northern areas), and urban and southern communities.

To address this challenge, some communities are working towards a variety of innovative, locally driven broadband development initiatives. Among them is Klemtu, a remote First Nation village of 500 people nestled in a small harbour along the shores of Swindle Island in British Columbia that is only accessible by boat or float-plane.

How Are You, Really? A Call to the Community

As social changemakers, we place a lot of responsibility on ourselves to do more and respond more urgently during moments of crisis. At CSI, we say, “It’s up to us.” And while that remains true, it’s important to acknowledge that working amid uncertainty, grief, loss, and isolation whilst balancing the needs of relationships, home, and financial pressures can take a significant toll on our mental health. Burnout, and it’s more conversational counterpart, screen fatigue, are real. If you’re feeling exhausted, you’re not alone. We see you.

So, as Mental Health Week comes to a close, it’s a great reminder to check in, especially given the state of the world – and to acknowledge that support doesn’t stop once the week ends.

We have some big news! The world is changing and so must CSI! We told our members earlier today and now we want to tell you. CSI has made the decision to put 720 Bathurst up for sale and consolidate our operations into CSI Spadina.

In the background, CSI CEO Tonya Surman is speaking into a microphone on the left. In the middle and on the right, a variety of people stand and sit, listening to her speak.
One of the keys to CSI's magic is our Community Animator Program (CAP) and, specifically, the Community Animators themselves! Through this program, we've worked with more than 1,000 exceptional individuals who have each brought a little something different, and a little sparkle, to our spaces. And we're so glad to have had them in our community, because we've learned that each and every one of them has some exceptional talents, skills, and experiences to offer the world!
