The Story of CSI New York

In May 2013, we brought CSI’s secret sauce to New York City, moving into the Starrett-Lehigh building in Manhattan. Nestled in the epicentre of an evolving art, innovation and technology scene, CSI New York became a bright, vibrant, 24,000 sq. ft. home for changemakers working across sectors.

For seven years, we built community, hosted thousands of events, and catalyzed innovation. In 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, we made the difficult decision to close the doors to this building.

Though CSI New York is no longer in the Starrett-Lehigh building, the passion, motivation, and sheer energy of our community lives on outside of its walls.

Memories of the Space

Before we left the Starrett-Lehigh building in 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic, we took the time to document our beloved CSI space with a 360 video.

We designed the space with our values in mind. Everything custom-built was fashioned by local craftspeople using reclaimed materials, from tables made with old freight elevator doors to the vintage wallpaper in our meeting rooms. The cabinets and shelves in our shared kitchen are from a run-down mill. (Have a look at this post by Furnished Green for more on the design and some great photos!)

We brought the space to life with touches like art, unique light fixtures and repurposed treasures throughout, but it was, of course, the community that really gave the space its energy and appeal.
